WiFi-APs with insufficient performance on Starlink connection

Notice on Risk in Excessive Communication Costs of Backup Lines

Thank you for your continued business.

Currently, many companies have been installing Starlink on their vessels.

While Starlink provides a very fast connection compared to that of conventional satellites,
there have been cases where the WiFi access points (WiFi-APs) installed on vessels are
too old to provide sufficient speed performance.

The following is a summary of points to be taken into account for this matter:

If you wish to use Starlink for crew’s internet, you will need a relatively high-performance WiFi-AP, as older WiFi-APs do not provide sufficient speed performance.

If you have a WiFi-AP of 3rd generation or earlier, it's recommended to replace it
with a newer model.

WiFi-AP standards and maximum speed
 1st generation  (model 802.11)      2Mbps
 2nd generation (model 802.11b)  11Mbps
 3rd generation (model 802.11g)   54Mbps
 4th generation (model 802.11n)   600Mbps
 5th generation (model 802.11ac)  6.9Gbps
 6th generation (model 802.11ax)  9.6Gbps

ORCA used to supply WiFi-APs of two models separately (802.11n and 802.11ac), however,
we will provide only 802.11ac WiFi-APs from now on.

If you’ve been bothered that the crew’s internet is not good enough on your good vessel,
please feel free to contact us for WiFi-APs replacement.
The replacement devices will be pre-configured and can be replaced by the crew.
Thanks & best regards.
