: The necessity of the dedicated E-mail account for Chart correction software

Thank you for your continuous support as always.

 

We would like to talk about the troubles which is being brought by Nautical chart calibration software (e.g. Chartco, Digitrace) in updating.

 

data communications: that Software is now adopted among most Vessels.

And also we would like to suggest the solutions.

 

The Software technically sends the updating data as E-mail attachments.

In the process of sending, the data is usually supposed to be divided into the appropriate sizes so as not to exceed a certain size.

However, over the 10~20MB size of data can sometimes be sent at once when much data needs to be sent.

 

Once the sum total of individual emails reaches the limitation of her mailbox capacity, all new E-mails are rejected, even if the size of the new E-mail is within "the limitation of individual mail size".

 

Since the beginning of this year the data communication over 20MB is running frequently as mentioned above, some vessels are missing a part of data, which is become a trouble now.

 

Meanwhile, there's another new issue: some vessels can't receive an official E-mail until receiving the updating data even though the E-mail box size is enough big.

 

It takes 3~5 minutes to receive the 1MB data even under Inmarsat FBB500 infrastructure: it should take more than 1 hour to receive all emails whose total amount of data is over 20MB.

The Charterer and Management Company have faced this issue:they can't reach Vessels in an emergency immediately while she is receiving the updating data.

 

Taking measure of this matter, we would like to recommend this:preparing a dedicated E-mail address apart from the official one; setting the account enough big.

 

It might be practical solutions for the trouble:she won't miss any updating data; won't be interfered official E-mail operations.

For emergency, she can stop sending/receiving the updating data, instead, she should use an official E-mail only since the updating data communication should be conducted at night.

 

Please note that sending/receiving operation on other E-mail system such as AMOS, SKYFILE and UMImail is run at the same time with sub E-mail account.

 

For this, the Vessel which is installed such this E-mail system can't solve this issue: the mass updating data communications might prevent her from using the official E-mail properly.

 

For the Vessels using above E-mails system, we would like to prepare the dedicated E-mail account for updating data apart from official one.
