History

ISM code became a new challenge in the shipping industry in 1993. ORCA Co. Ltd. was established in order to assist shipowners and ship management companies for the acquisition of ISM Code DOC, SMC.

SMS documentation for ship management is required by ISM code, but we considered preparing procedure manuals alone will not reduce the burden of crew on site and onshore superintendent, thereby we were among the first to start developing ship safety management software within the industry. It was still a time where ships with no computers, not even equipped with word processor and we felt that we cannot meet the demands of future sophisticated and complicated laws unless operational efficiency is improved by introducing computers.

Integration of IT and ship management was the concept launched by ORCA. Combining simple effective ship management software「ORCASYSTEM」with succinct SMS manuals, many shipping companies acquired ISM Code certification and we were able to contribute to the operational efficiency in ship management.

On the other hand, in order to operate onboard management software smoothly, maintenance of onboard computer environment and communication environment were required. Because maritime IT was a new field to the long-standing shipping industry, departments and agents taking charge of this part were still unfamiliar within the field. We believe supporting this part is essential for centric ship management in the future and thereby launched the N-OASYS service which is a contract for maritime IT maintenance & management. In this maintenance service, we pride ourselves not only on our software but also for the contributions made to the smooth operation of various IT implemented in the shipping industry.

Eventually, due to the development of satellite communication, more sophisticated and complex maritime IT had been advanced. We considered the connection of ship network and communication infrastructure as the key component of maritime IT management and thereby developed ORION router with advanced management functions. Today, this equipment has become more sophisticated as ORIONPLUS router and acts as a hub of maritime IT management. 

Concurrent with the progress of maritime IT, interests in cyber security is growing, but to us it has been a consistent maritime IT management that has been made for over 25 years. ORION routers were installed with functions for security management at an early stage. In order to fulfill the role of maintenance appropriately, we were quickly in acquiring the certification of ISO27001 in the industry. Our leading product 「ORCASYSTEM」is making good progress in networking and cloud computing and we strive to respond to the online vessel era to come.

We pride ourselves being fully engaged making contributions for the implementation of IT in the shipping industry a quarter of a century since our establishment. As a maritime IT operation pioneer within the shipping industry, we sincerely hope to be helpful in all aspects.
